MAKE and MCM Raspberry Pi Design Contest Competition: The Winners!

MCM Electronics partnered with MAKE Magazine to hold a Raspberry Pi Design competition. The idea was to have projects developed that anyone could replicate at home. We had over 48 entries, everything from Internet radio streaming to cat feeders. The projects were categorized into Artistic, Education, Utility and Enclosure themes. There was 1 Grand Prize winner, and 4 runner-up winners. The Grand Prize winner took home a Printrtbot
JR. 3D printer plus other assorted electronic accessories from MCM Electronics. I was lucky enough to be chosen as a judge and let me tell you it was difficult to choose between all the great entries. [More]

My name is Brandon, and I am a Product Analyst here at MCM. I am fortunate enough to be one of the people involved with the Raspberry Pi product line. Specifically, I get to test some of the new products and accessories that we bring in, and also determine product compatibility. Recently, we were working on putting together a low power Raspberry Pi kit, focused around a Raspberry Pi model A and a rechargeable battery pack. We wanted to determine how long the model A would run on a single charge of the battery, so I went about finding a way to test it.

Raspberry Pi Model A

The Raspberry Pi Model A is the $25 computer the Raspberry Pi Foundation promised. It is the low-cost, low power little brother of the Model B boasting the same processor and high resolution HDMI output. The Model in contrast to the Model B uses only 1-2 watts of power compared to the 3-5 watts of the Model B. This makes it great for use in mobile applications where power is very limited. A perfect application for this would be a wireless media center streaming media over the network.
